Perfume and power - quite the heady combination. It was the European
monarchs who first provided inspiration and promotion to the perfume
houses. According to legend, while fleeing the country during the French Revolution,
Marie Antoinette disguised herself as a commoner. Unfortunately for her,
the queen's beloved Houbigant fragrance betrayed her nobility status, earning
her a trip to the guillotine and beheading.
